What could be better than multiple monitors? Samsung 49-inch gaming display An “ultrawide” display that enhances gaming immersion and facilitates multitasking over a regular widescreen monitor. Yet that didn’t satisfy Samsung. The enormous 49-inch QLED gaming display heralds a completely new design – let’s name it “super ultrawide” – capable of replacing cumbersome three-monitor setups. While it may appear odd, it may be just what some gamers are seeking for.

Still, the amount of desk space used by this display shocked me. Its 32:9 aspect ratio is notably greater than that of 21:9 monitors, which commonly have 34-inch or 27-inch panels. It also has a bigger base than most other screens, and the screen’s edges protrude considerably further out, almost absurdly so. I could readily see the appeal once I sat down in front of it. It has the largest real estate of any desktop monitor I’ve seen.

The monitor’s resolution of 3,840 by 1,080 is unusual. For comparison, ultrawide displays generally have either 2,560 by 1,080 or 3,440 by 1,440 pixels. It also has a deep curve (1800R) that allows you to see all corners of the screen. There are two HDMI connectors and two DisplayPort connections on the monitor (one of which is a MiniDisplayPort). On the rear, there’s also a USB 3.0 hub with three connections. The on-screen setup menu is also a step above what we see on comparable displays today. Gamers will love the monitor’s quick one-millisecond reaction time and 144Hz refresh rate. Both of these additions will improve the responsiveness and performance of first-person games like Call of Duty and Overwatch. It has HDR capabilities, as do most recent displays, and it supports AMD’s Freesync 2 standard. The latter provide the smoothest gaming performance, with no screen tearing. It’s also part of Samsung’s new “Quantum Dot” QLED gaming portfolio, which means it employs nanoparticles to provide greater lighting and color representation than standard LED panels.

I’ve tried a lot of gaming monitors over the years, but the 49-inch display from Samsung piqued my interest since it’s so different. And it did not let me down. I got the opportunity to play Battlefield 1 and Mass Effect Andromeda during a quick demo in New York City, and both games looked excellent. The display kept up with my mouse movements throughout firefights; colors were really accurate, and the brilliant HDR parts leapt off the screen. There was also a lot of subtlety in the darker situations, which was particularly beneficial for Battlefield’s terrifying open objective.

I was most amazed by how immersive the monitor felt. It accurately mimicked the impression of gaming on a three-monitor configuration, with the exception that I didn’t have to deal with bothersome bezels in the middle. There was nothing but a screen. It’s one of the reasons I fell in love with ultrawide screens in the first place, and Samsung’s latest monitor takes that feeling to new heights. Both games made use of the unusual resolution, although your mileage may vary with other releases. If you can run a game on three monitors at the same time, chances are it will look fine on this screen.

On Samsung’s new screen, you can do much more than just play games. During my demonstration, I was able to fit three full-sized windows side by side. It might be quite handy for content creators that need to work with timeline-focused video and audio editing tools. I only wish there was more vertical room. While I could read most webpages on the screen, I was dissatisfied with how often I had to scroll up and down. Nonetheless, I could work around that by zooming out or changing the display scale settings in Windows. You can also have two inputs displayed side by side on the screen, which is something that other ultrawide monitors can accomplish but is more practical with a 49-inch panel.

Samsung’s 49-inch gaming display, priced at $1,499, is surprisingly comparable with ultrawide panels. Dell’s highest-resolution 34-inch Alienware screen costs the same, but LG’s newest model costs only $1,000. Sure, they are much more costly than standard-size gaming monitors, but they’re not that much more expensive if you’re looking to build a twin or triple-monitor setup.

If you’re searching for an ultrawide monitor for gaming, this one from Samsung is worth considering. It’s unique, yet it provides an immersive experience unlike any other display.
